LIcense Questions - IP or Domain?

I've got a few questions about requesting a license key, I've spoken to AbleCommerce and they were very helpful but I'm still a bit confused and I think I'll do better if I spell it out in words.

We are hosting our own websites (about 20 total, 1 of them being ecommerce) and we are currently running Storefront software and switching to AbleCommerce. We also recently setup a new Web Server Farm and Development Server. The current ecommerce site is still on the old server.

So I have:
Server A - old server - hosting current ecommerce site (http://www.devonsuperstore.com)
Server B - old server - hosting development of old site (dev.www.devonsuperstore.com)
Server C - New Webfarm - will be hosting ablecommerce (http://www.devonsuperstore.com - when we make the switch, the store won't go offline during the transition, right now it internally is x.www.devonsuperstore.com)
Server D - New Dev - hosting development of AbleCommerce (dev.devonsuperstore.com - already installed and running wonderfully)

I feel like I should be requesting a license key by IP address, however whatever IP I request the key on won't be the external IP, just internal (we have DNS servers and everything - if that matters). So if I request a key for the x.www.devonsuperstore.com site by its ip address (say 10.x.x.x) will that work? I'm not really an IT guy, but as the project lead I've got to figure all this out. Thanks in advance!

The RC3 release of AC7 supports a development/demo mode now that doesn't require a keycode. Just use your live keys on your live installs (coded to the final domain names you intend to use) and run your development installs in demo mode.

Otherwise, you're going to need several keys and it'll get confusing pretty quickly because those keys are tied to either the IP or domain name you specified when the keys were ordered.

Hope that helps :)

It helps I think. SO you are saying I should just request the key by domain? Then just install the key when we go live on the new server?

Also, I have RC2 :(

I suppose I need to upgrade.

Definitely. Able put an enormous amount of effort into RC3 and the improvements are immediately noticeable.

I would clarify with Able your final intentions just to be sure there are no surprises down the road. I don't officially represent them so their word is the law, not mine. But I would say yes, pick your keycodes for your live domains and do development in the demo mode. Demo mode restriction involves billing/shipping info not passing through on a order, so if you're developing mods involving them you might need a dev keycode at some point.

It all depends on what you need and what you're changing later on. Fire up the demo mode first and see if it meets your needs. No reason to move forward on assumptions if you can answer the questions first.

They did change the licensing in RC3 so that it would be easier for development. If you have a valid license to a domain name, you can set your store in the admin to run in demo mode.

Well my demo license expired and it is asking for me to update my license. I followed the instructions for an "expired Key" in the help/knowledge base and I'm getting a Server Error (Object reference not set to an instance of an object - which is pretty generic right?)

I've upgraded to RC3 and I thought I was running in demo mode - not sure what to do next? Our live server/install isn't up and/or running yet since I'm waiting for some third party customizations but I do have a license key.

Thanks,
Dappy

I'm not sure if you can get it after an expired demo key. Try deleting the CommerceBuilder.lic file from the App_Data folder (or rename it to be safer). That might get the site to prompt you for a license key. If you have a valid real-domain license, try putting in a support ticket.
