I would like to add a quick note to a line item without having to go through the custom template inputs.

There is LineMessage field available under OrderItem members. Is this used currently being used for something?

Joe from Solunar created a great posting to add a Comment field to User at viewtopic.php?f=47&t=6813.

I use it now to note comments about the customer such as contact person and cell phone or any other miscellaneous info like 3rd party FedEx account number. Great catch all field.

Looking to do something similar with the LineMessage if possible??

Yes, that's what linemessage is for - a comment on a basket/order item. It is not implemented in our out of the box interface, but the field is supported and will remain in future versions.
