Does SSL = Yes/No control shipping, tax calculations?

We've set up ship methods, tax rules, all products are marked taxable, also all ship methods (all the FEDEX possibilities), ordering from and shipping to the taxable state.
No ship methods and no taxes calculated ... is it necessary to have SSL set to Yes for all this to work?

No! I am on a development server and don't have SSL running. When I do test orders I am able to pick the shipping method and the software calculates taxes for the tax rules I have set up. A snapshot is displayed below, you go to Configure | Taxes | Tax Rules in the admin area of your store.

Also, you have to put a value for the weight field for each product.
Hopefully this helps you.

I did the tax rules still don't see any taxes. I'll try this - maybe it solves the
"world's" problems (so to speak).
Thanks,
