AC7 Enhancement Modules for sale

Post by AbleMods » Fri May 16, 2008 8:13 pm

Well I'm finally getting around to putting together complete module enhancements to AC7. This one is my first product officially for sale and also my way of testing digital goods functionality in AC7. Eventually I will set up a separate site to handle my programming sales, but for now Solunar.com will have to do.

Check it out at http://www.solunar.com/Complete-Modules-C636.aspx. It's fully documented, tested and ready for purchase. I would enjoy any feedback on the product presentation, description and purchase/delivery experience (if you choose to buy it).

I've never sold digital goods online before, so this whole process is brand new to me. My next module will be a clean, easy-to-install Tabbed Product Description module. I should have that up this weekend.

If you have any requests, feel free to PM me and I'll assess the resale potential versus project complexity. It's one thing to modify an install to do something. It's a completely different issue to modify it in such a way to minimize file changes and simplify installation and use. I've already learned that lesson more times than I can count ;)

EDIT The tabbed product display page is now available.

Joe, how does the Custom Field module differ from the product template fields? Right now we're using those to display our custom info.

They are similar but Custom Fields does offer some useful differences. For instance:

Only one set of template fields can only be assigned to a particular product, and this assignment must be done collectively as a group. Custom Fields are individual and can be different from product to product. One product can have a NoStockETA field while another product can have a StockStatus field.

Templates create all template fields for the product whether you use them all or not for each product. With Custom Fields, you only create what is needed for that particular product. This improves management of the data later as the data grows.

In a general sense, Custom Fields are purely for enhancement through programming modification. Templates are more for visitor-side or merchant-side entry.

At the end of the day, I prefer Custom Fields because you can only ever assign one set of template fields to a product. That seems very limiting when it comes to future growth of what custom fields I want with a product. In other words, with a template I have to give ALL the products the new field even if I only need on the 10 Non Shippable ones. Custom Fields doesn't have that requirement.

If you want good programming flexibility, go with Custom Fields. If you want simple admin and visitor side interfacing, go with Product Templates.
