I am running into one problem after another when trying to develop on vista. Are most of you who are coding this using vista or xp. I am very tempted to install server 2008 and develop off that. I am finding this to be an incredible hassle. Nothing works easily with vista.

I haven't tried to develop in Vista because off all the security quirks. You could try using a Virtual PC with XP Pro on it on vista- I have done that.

I think most of us are using WinXP.

I am doing a set up on another machine that has xp, to see how it goes before i blow away my vista set up. I have been developing quite a while now so I know a good chunk of things. I say this with regret as I wanted vista to work out, but its turning out to be way too much of a pain to do things, and really getting in my way of getting things done. I am going to be doing a lot of custom work on able sites, i need this to be as pain free as I can. Vista is just not cutting it. I am also toying with putting win 2008 server on my machine and developing off that instead.

I use both XP and Win Svr 2003 for development. The thing I like most about 2003 is how few processes I get away with.

One dev I know with Vista disabled the UAC stuff to make development easier.

I know on the uac thing, I tried that, but it does not really work all that well, I still run into issues, many times you still have to open things as admin whether uac is on or not. Vista to me is becoming as bad as millenium was.

I use Vista for mine, because that's what I have...
Unfortunately, tech support is mostly unwilling to help at all when this is the case. I have been able to make it work, however, using Visual Web Developer Express. Unfortunately, I have only been able to connect to a SQLExpress database...
I definitely wouldn't recommend it. It has become extremely slow (even just writing and pasting code), and that are weird quirks that occur from time to time.
Hope this helps.

I agree with the comment about Win 2003 Server. Its much better if you can afford it.

I dont know of many companies that develop any software at all, that use Vista.
