skipping order numbers

Lately, when i've been processing orders, i've seen that order numbers have been skipped. Anyone have any ideas on what's causing this?

Don't really have any details, other than when i went into order manager and noticed that 3 order numbers in a row were skipped. This also happened a month ago, when 2 sequential order numbers were skipped.
It was suggested that these numbers may have been assigned to abandoned orders/shopping carts. Maybe, but it seems unlikely to me, given that it's only happened 2x over the last 4 months with 500+ orders.

Go to Configure...Store in the merchant admin. What are your settings on the lower left section for "Increment"?

increment is 1. Orders have been received, with the exception noted, this way for 6 months.
