hi i'm wondering if there is a way to for the order status to refer to the orderItem not the order. Take the following example

A user orders:
1 x product with cat printed on it
1 x product with dog printed on it

we want to be able to assign the custom status "printed" to cat product without effected the printed with dog

thanks, any work arounds?

It doesn't seems to me that there is any simple workaround regarding this scenario.

With product templates or custom fields you may come close to an acceptable solution. If you define a custom field named Status and have possible values for it like 'In Printing', 'Printed' or whatever and then in the order manager manually change the status of the individual order item that has been printed.
