Can anyone provide examples on how to offer a product for free but the customer has to pay for shipping?

You could just list a product at $0.00 and as long as a weight is setup for the product, it should still calculate shipping accordingly.

Alternately, if you were running a promotion, you could setup a coupon for that product for 100% off and it will still calculate shipping.

Is there a way to offer this if a customer purchases over $50 worth of merchandise?

go to: Marketing > Coupon > Order Coupon

Discount amount: 100%
Min Purchase: $50
You may want to specify a max value
Product Rule: Valid only with selected products
