Anyone know what this does? I can't seem to make it do anything.

I presumed it represented the mailing list that all new site registrations would be automatically added to. But I can't seem to get that to happen on my site.

I haven't worked with the email lists feature in ages, what am I missing?

Well one thing it does is that if you are using the SubscribeToEmailList control in store pages and you have specified the default Email list then this control will show and subscribe the users with this default list even if you haven't specified the EmailListId property of the control.
