I'm looking for the correct upgrade path from build 8272 to the current build (9879). Can I simply install the current build over 8272 or do I need to apply all (or some) of the builds between 8272 and the latest build?

Also, is such an upgrade part of the initial purchase or is there a point where money needs to be spent?

Yes the upgrades are the part of the initial purchase

According to your build number 8272 you are at RC1 Build. So you will start from the Post upgrade tasks when upgrading from RC1 or RC2 and so on up to the final. Each and every thing is mentioned in the link i have mentioned above.

Yes you have to apply all the upgrade patches available within your current build to the final.

I was looking through the ftp.ablecommerce.com site for the individual patches needed. Is there a definate list of the files needed to upgrade and the order in which they need to be applied?

I think there is a list and links to the files and upgrade steps on help.ablecommerce.com.
