I need to apply pricing rules to give a discount to a bunch of products that have variants. The discounts are usergroup based and need to be applied to one variant or the other, not necessarily both.
The products are being sold in quantities of 1 item or 1 case of items. The Variant for the case is set to override the price.

Re: pricing rules for variant products
I would use kits not variants.
Make 2 products
(single thing) at $10 for this group and $5.55 for this group (use "pricing rules" to add the prices for the group)
Then make a 2nd product called (Case of things) $20 for this group and $6 for that group using "Pricing Rules".
You can make these products hidden.
Then make a product like (order things) and use kits, add (single thing) and (case of things) to its kit list.
This should give the correct prices for each group.
