updating license key question

We have tried out AbleCommerce and are looking to purchase a license key. The trial was set up on our servers in a shared environment. We will be changing our domain to a dedicated ip set-up and wanted to be sure this would not interfere with the update of the key or the cart itself. It was mentioned somewhere that the license key was "bound to the website, domain name, or IP address " and since our ip will be changing we wanted to be sure this would not cause any problems in regards to the cart and/or our key update. Any info would be appreciated.

Good eye - some people don't remember that key sentence and get themselves into challenging deployment situation

The license is keyed to a particular host. The host can be an IP or a domain name. AC7 uses HTTP handlers, so any hits to the site will automatically redirect to the domain/host licensed to the installed key.

If you're planning to run a "test" AC7 install (always a good idea) on a public internet IP, you can just run it in demo mode until you're ready to go live. Once you've pointed your DNS to the host you can install the AC7 live key and everything should fall into place for you.

So the short answer is get the key licensed to you final http://www.yourwebsite.com address :)

If you need full functionality testing on a public IP, things get more complicated. You'll have to buy an SSL cert for your test IP and get a second AC7 keycode. Most people buy a second key called a "dev key" from Able. Combined with the SSL cert and the dev key, you can run a completely functional test AC7 install on a public IP.
Going "live" would involve loading a new SSL cert for the final domain name and loading the new live key for AC7.

I have 3 keys. One for the live site. A second for a public IP test site. My third one is used for my local development and programming on my private LAN. Having that 2nd public key helps A LOT when I want to test a major site change without affecting the existing site. I think I registered it to test.mywebsite.com.

Thanks very much for the info, Joe. Having an additional license key for testing major upgrades sounds like a good idea...something we hadn't considered. We just wanted to be sure we weren't getting ourselves in a pickle with our hosting changes and key upgrades.
