Categories on home page

Hi,
I am trying to keep the main categories visible on the left sidebar on the sub category page and then the product page for easier navigation. This way you can see the main categories, sub categories even when viewing a product. Does anyone know how to do this. Right now I am using a simple category list for the left sidebar.
