Swatches and dropdown box

I knnow the swatches disaply as a little thumbnail images. I need them to be listed in a drop down list instead, and when selection changes the product image change as well. Is there a way to do this? thanks

It would have to be customized. There might have been a post on the forum long ago, but I'm not sure.
