Selecting Category Display

We have come to a crossroads in deciding whether to make our category view a Grid view or a List view.
Our idea is to build a pair of buttons or a drop down to select which view the customer wants. The problem I have in writing it is that it needs to remember this through out the site. With that, does anybody know if this has been done? is for sale? or maybe wants to help a friend out
