I've run AC for so many years I feel embarrassed when I have to ask questions.
Is there any way to assign a different/special footer for just one category in the store (and all the sub categories that are in it)?

Well first you need to duplicate the category display page so that display page with different footer could be used. Then you need to login as admin and go to retail pages. There go to category where you want to have different footer and edit that page from bottom edit options. In Themes and Display Pages section Display Pages dropdown box will be listing new duplicate copy of category page. Choose that as display page. Apply it and finally choose new footer for this page.
