How to configure style sheet CSS for the Left menu table bar

Hello:
I'm having a trouble of doing CSS for the left menu bar. It seems that it won't take any change that I made except for the ".h2" text. Currently, I'm using the default template "Glass_SilverAge" but hoping to use the left menu from the "Glass_MidNight" I copied the 'left menu' css from the the Midnight and replaced it the css on the SilverAge, and I did copy images from the Midnight as well. However, I'm having two troulbe:
1) When the brower shrink (smaller than 1024), the left menu bar will show white background(table cell) only
2) No effect to whatever color I changed on the CSS, only the title .h2 (Categories) and the background(not the menu table)will take the effect
I tried to replace the skin file but doing so will cause system 'bomb'
