Variant SKU Search

I was just playing w/ my AC7 demo store and realized that the site search doesn't work for SKU and the "Add New Order" sku search in the Admin doesn't work for variants.
We are a multi-channel merchant and publish the product SKUs in the catalog. Unfortunatley, we don't use a base-sku + option scheme, but a completely different sku for each variant (e.g. 2050, 2150, 2155 instead of 2050-A, 2050-B, 2050-C). Is there any way to get the SKU search to work for the variants? I don't care if it brings back the master product and I have to choose the correct one.
