Added weight for packing

Post by Brewhaus » Thu Dec 11, 2008 10:01 pm

We would like to see the ability to add a preset weight to the order to allow for a box / packing material when calculating shipping costs. We consistently charge based on less than the actual shipping weight because the box and packing put the total weight over the next pound.

Can we get a work around on this for now? I recently put in the correct weight for all my items and now every box weight is off since there is no way to account for the packaging.

I would have to think that it should be as simple as adding a pre-determined weight from directly within the code where the shipment weight is calculated, prior to rounding the weight (I believe that AC rounds the weight up to the next pound for submission to USPS, UPS, etc.). This would not be something that everyone would want to do (go directly into the file and make the adjustment), but I certainly would. This is one of the major things stopping us from migrating our other site over to AC, and it also costs us daily on shipping that has calculated low due to the weight of packing material.

Is this going to be addressed? It is a common option that I have seen in most other carts. What is the point of storing weights and calculating real time shipping when its always wrong because we are not allowed to account for the weight of a box?

We actually had to go through and add a small amount of weight to every item to compensate for the weight of the box. The only problem with this is that when a customer orders a large number of items the shipping can err very high, and that can cause the loss of a sale.

Exactly..I tried to do the same. But I have people order 1 of a item or 50 and at 50 the weight is way off.

Unfortunately, I have been asking this question on the forum since I first started with AC, which I believe is 2.5 years ago now. Somewhere a weight is calculated and sent to UPS, USPS, FedEx, etc.- all we need to do is have the ability to add a specific weight of our choosing. The system is already adding the product weights, so how difficult would it be to add a flat rate into this?
