More flexible searching for a customer than just using email

Doesn't a feature exist that enables you to search for a customer without the need of their email address. We are setting up our first able commerce site v 7.1 for the UK and are suprised that this feature is not provided.
Not all our customers have email or are happy to provide an email address to us so currently we may need to search on surname+first name and then additionally a postcode for example. Help?
