AbleCommerce Shopping Cart Software

Hello,
the current URL rewerite implemented in AbleCommerce does not support unicode charcters . i.e when i add a product with a japanese charecters , it is displayed in the url as a blank . is there a way to support unicode ? what is the function exactly that does the re-write so it can be modified to support unicode ?
