All AC5.5 categories imported into top level

When importing an AC5.5 store using dataport 7.02, all of our categories wind up at the top level, and most categories in ac_Categories have a ParentID of 0

Now, instead of manually moving these categories, let's say category #3 has ParentID of 0, we change ParentID to 2000, thnking that category 2 will now sit in category 2000

Of course, it just disappears from admin and the store.

So we set cateory 2's ParentID back to 0, and it does not show up in admin or store, even if we restart the web adn sql server.

Im guessing some kind of caching is happening? Could someone explain why this won't work, I have no idea how 7.02 deals with all this stuff now.
