I don't want to say that was an easy solution, as I am sure that you had to put a lot of work into it when you first figured it out, but it is far more brief than I had expected- and worked like a charm! Thank you once again for all of your help on this.
Now I just have to figure out one nagging issue- overriding the title of the home page (so that we can run two unrelated sites, requiring separate titles on the home page, from the same DB). I assume that one of the files used to create the Default.aspx file must specify the WebpageID to use for the home page, but I cannot find where that is referrenced. I expect that changing the WebpageID being referrenced would allow me to use a different title, description, HTML head, etc. Or am I way off base?
It would actually be nice if they started using the "StoreID", as that would likely set it up for running multiple stores from one DB, and selecting which products were used in which store.
