One of the things that kept us waiting so long to do AC7 was that we had heavily customized AC5 to do things like multi-store inventory, batch pick/pack, batch authorization, etc. We still have a split of AC5/AC7 stores that we are supporting because of the pain we experienced in rewriting everything in C# and upgrading our first site. As such, new sites have been created in AC7 and old sites have stayed in AC5.

Does AbleCommerce Gold do anything to support multi-store installations, such as shared inventory? Are there any improvements like printing batch pick/pack lists?

In Gold you can batch print packing slips, and there is also a batch capture feature. Unfortunately, no, we did not tackle multiple stores and shared inventory. We discussed this when plotting out Gold and our consensus was more time was needed to make it the way we really want it. The feature is definitely on our roadmap for a future release.
