Related Products or Similar Products not working?

I have added every combination of the related products or similar products control to the product layouts but, nothing shows up. Do I need to do something to get it to work?

I don't know, I saw the controls in the layout manager so I added them to see what they do. They do nothing. I must be doing something wrong. I have added them to different products, categories, nothing.

I tested the similar products and they do appear on my test store where I am using sample data. I think similar products control will only work on a page where there is a product context available example is product details page.

Do I need to do something to have products show up in the similar products? Or is it automatic? Is it just pulling up products in the same category? I am ok with that, just not sure why nothing is showing.

You need to mark some products related/similar which can be done on Edit Product page in admin. If you edit some product and then go to similar products tab there you will have option to link products. For example if you cross link your product to another product then if you navigate to any of them on retail side and related product control is available on details page the linked one will show up there.
