Is there a way to control the mobile detection so I can work on the mobile site before making it public?

From the Admin area, go to Config > Store > Mobile Settings and uncheck Enable Mobile Support. Obviously, you will then have to type in the mobile part of the url to test your work.

Oops, I guess I was incorrect, it looks like unchecking Enable Mobile Support prevents a browser from accessing the mobile pages, even if you type in the url with mobile in it.

Yup, that's my issue. I know I can modify the detection in the source and re-compile but would rather not do that.

I guess if you have a Dev site license (either included in one of the special deals, or purchased separately), you could set up a development site in addition to your live site, and work on it there.
