Does the "similar products" options work?

We currently have our system setup so that a product has a tab for other products in that category. Is this different then the "similar products" tab. We've tried to cross link some similar products but can't see where they're showing up.

I think that the similar products you set up are used in the Related Products control that you can use on a Side Bar, not on a tab in the Product Description.

Is it possible to customize the tab that shows other products in this category to show the links from "similar products" if so what needs to be edited?
