Custom fields for variants

I've done custom fields for a Product before but can custom fields be used for variants?

You would have to use a store customfield instead of a productcustomfield and use the variant id for the key. You could also use one of the fields specific to a variant if you are not using them all. For example, you could use the icon url field and change the code that displays that on the customer side.
