PayPal Express site and Gold 9 adding home state tax?

Post by WebDev7 » Tue Mar 31, 2015 7:45 am

Hello.

I have a scenario on my Gold 9 store when I put an item in my cart, go to PayPal express to log in , Im seeing my stores tax in the PayPal amount at PayPal's site.

When I have another user try this, that is not in my state, they do not see the additional amount on the cart total for tax.

--> Ive checked my PayPal.com account and there is no additional taxes set or shipping.
(Just a basic business account Ive been using for Able Commerce for years now).

--> When I add a test item as non-taxable and log into PayPal express, I don't see the tax.

--> isn't tax only suppose to be calculated on OPC or the multiple checkout? How is pay Pal getting this information from just being on the basket/cart page?
(PayPal express uses multiple page checkout)

--> Is there some sort of code reading my account and seeing my tax-amount as im located in the same state that my store is in?

Thank you in advance :)

Hello,

I'm not sure if I understand the problem you are having.

PayPal Express Checkout - Customers shop in your AbleCommerce store. When they are ready to checkout, there will be a PayPal Express button that will redirect the customer to PayPal's website. The customer will login to their own PayPal account, return to your store to select a shipping method, and then go back to PayPal's site to make a payment.

Taxes are calculated using your AbleCommerce tax rules. It shouldn't make any difference if you are using Paypal or some other gateway. The taxes should be working. If you are having trouble with this feature, then please give us some information on your tax situation. What tax codes and tax rules you have setup, and what shipping destinations are being used.

Thanks
Katie

Thanks for a verification on the PayPal process.
Although, you may want to note: they do not go back to the PayPal site to make the payment IF they are using PayPal Express. They Log into PayPal first from the cart, come back, then pick shipping and finalize their order on the last checkout page by clicking the button "finalize order pay with payPal" or they can select another payment method. They only go to paypals site using IPN paypal.

Since yesterday when I posted and dug around some more, The problem is that my client wants to know why there is being tax added to PayPal before he hits multiple page checkout. It may have been like this before BUT My Client customers are noticing this now because there is no "break out" of pre sale and tax total at paypal.com anymore - just an amount. Ive mentioned this to my client and they want to know if they can turn off that tax amount that is sent over to paypal. Im sure we can turn it off as a customization for him although payPal wants the address to match up becuase of Seller Protections.

Basically PayPal needs to go back to the UI they had with the amount breakout OR something that states that "taxes are included"

Thanks :)

Katie, it looks like the merchant doesn't like the tax included in the order amount when he goes to Paypal. He sent a screenshot of a site where he placed an order that should be taxable and it didn't roll the tax in when he got to the first screen on Paypal. I'm digging into it now.

Edit- I just looked at an order I placed recently for some software because I remembered that I had been charged tax. The amount shown in Paypal has the tax rolled in to the total, giving an amount of $45.35. My receipt from the company shows product at $42.48 and tax of $2.87, totaling $45.35. So I am seeing the same kind of result on Paypal with a different company that our client is seeing.

I checked and we are sending the tax amount with the cart total when express checkout is used. At PayPal we just show basket total and no breakup so it seems confusing as taxes are not shown at basket page before billing & shipping addresses are selected so the total amounts at basket page and PayPal looks different. I am going to log an issue and will investigate it in details.

Thanks for reporting.
