Gold images, thumbnails, icons

Post by msandin » Tue Apr 14, 2015 11:54 am

Folks,

I'm continuing my work on moving data from our in-house system to AbleCommerce Gold R8. My current question is basically, how are the thumbnails and icons created? I am using the "data->Import->Product" sequence to add and change products. That seems to be working good at this time (in our test area).

Is there any way to automate the upload of the main image and creation of the thumbnail and icon.

It appears to me that 600x600 is the preferred size of the main .jpg image. what are the recommended sizes for the thumbnail and icon?

Should I look for an external routine to size the main image to 600x600 and create the appropriate thumbnail and icon sizes and then use an ftp to upload to the /Assets/ProductImages folder.

Thanks for your help and suggestions...

Hello Miles,

You can change the default values of images that are uploaded using the automatic resizer. The Configure > Store > Image Settings page is where you would do that.

Ref - http://help.ablecommerce.com/mergedProj ... ttings.htm

You can upload and resize any large image to create the main img, thumbnail, and icon. If you are just wanting to get the image uploaded and resized, then you can do this from the Catalog > Images page.

Ref - http://help.ablecommerce.com/mergedProj ... anager.htm

If you want to upload the image, resize, and automatically populate the product with the correct image references, then you can do this via the Images tab of any product editing page.

Another alternative is to use a different third-party program and resize them outside of AbleCommerce. Use FTP to get the images onto the server, and then use the Data Import to update the image reference fields.

Hope this helps,
Katie

I have used Batch Picture Resizer to do images in batches. You can resize them, name the new ones using a custom pattern, like xxx_t.jpg, and even put a watermark on at the same time. It is well worth the money if you can spend your time more wisely doing something else instead.
