Fixed product handling charge regardless of quantity?

My client just wants to charge an extra $3.50 for special packaging if a certain product is purchased. But they don't care how many the shopper buys, they only want to charge $ 3.50.

The product handling charge seems to work based on quantity. If a shopper buys a quantity of 3 of that product, the handling charge is multiplied by 3.

Is there any way to assess a 'flat rate' handling fee for specific products which ignores the quantity being purchased?

I couldn't find a way to do it without customization but thought I'd ask here for any other ideas.

Well, you probably won't like my answer, but you can assign the product to it's own warehouse and then add the handling fee as a shipping method for that warehouse only.

Just so you know, we are discussing ideas on how to improve the shipping feature so you can accomplish things like this without creating a separate shipment.

Here is a link to the feature request - https://ablecommerce.uservoice.com/foru ... ping-metho

One idea that we had was to create Shipping Groups. So, you can create different shipping groups (e.g. a group of compatible shipping methods) based on a warehouse. Then the merchant could select only applicable shipping groups for the product. We're still trying to figure out a way to handle the problem and are looking for feedback if you have any ideas. Of course, maintaining backwards compatibility is a must.

If Kits were more flexible and allowed you to add a set Quantity of some item, then that would work too.

Thanks
Katie

yea that's not going help unfortunately since it would generate additional shipments and shipping charges.

I'll add some thoughts to the uservoice entry.
