Username that is NOT email address

I would like to be able to set up a user name and password for users prior to them even knowing about my store. This way I could assign them to their "User Group" prior to them shopping online. But I will not have an email address - is there any way around this?

The email address is the login name and is required. The only option I can think of would be to set a temporary address first and change it to the real address later. That I've done personally and works as expected.
