Creating a payment installment plan

I am trying to figure out how to increase sales in this sluggish economy. Our products tend to be on the expensive side for some of our customers. If there a way to use the subscription setup to create a payment installment plan for the entire order. All I can think of is to make the gift certificate payable on an installment basis, but that requires the customer to checkout twice. Maybe there is a way to streamline it without a huge amount of work. Maybe there is an easy solution that that I am missing.

First thing that comes to mind is "Bill me Later" through Paypal. Not 100% what you were looking for but it might help.
