Who do you host with

Post by TTMedia » Mon Jan 21, 2008 12:50 pm

Trying to narrow down a decent hosting company for our AC 7.0 system.

Who do you host your system with and how do you like the company?

I just signed up with a VPS from triple8.net as I was not happy with shared hosting but did not want to move up to the price of a dedicated server. They where VERY helpfull in setting almost everything up for me. They almost always have someone in support for online chat which I like to use.

Are you seeing any difference in performance between shared and VPS?

We're on a shared host right now and are debating the move to a VPS.

My control issues got the best of me, so I bought a used DL360 G3 on Ebay and co-located at a data center here in Indianapolis.

SoftLayer is a good choice for dedicated. You might look around over at webhostingtalk.com for a deal.

redfoxhosting do a premier service (not available on their website you have to ask them about it) where they give you 5 MS SQL Server 2005 databases and the promise that the server you are hosted on will never have more that 40 websites present at one time. I upgraded to this recently and my performace speeds have drastically increased from shared hosting.

The service costs £9.95 per domain a month. If you sign up and are feeling generous put your referer as http://www.courseconsultant.com

@TTMedia -- on our shared host sometimes our site loads super-quick, very snappy. Other times it loads a lot slower. Over the holiday season, sometimes we timed out all together. The performance has just been pretty inconsistent.

Our hosting company, Appliedi.net, has been great as far as helping us try and diagnose what's going on. We determined it's not an app pool issue -- performance was the same with it set to no time out. They think it might be memory.

I don't know enough about these things to properly diagnose it one way or the other. All I know is it doesn't seems to load very quickly some times and other times it loads super-fast.

In the end we're still sharing a server with potentially 400+ other sites. That alone should probably be a red flag.

hosting a database driven website like able commerce on shared hosting has always worked slow for me. Dedicated hosting offers best performance but can be pricey, ask your host if they do anything in between shared and dedicated hosting. Some companies offer solutions that they do not advertise on their website.

Anyone else have reviews of who they are hosting with. Are most people with Shared or dedicated?

I setup with Lunarpages and although they seem to be a very good hosting company, things don't seem to be working with the setup. Looking to change to another host that will allow for the process to flow a bit better.

I don't know about the long run, but I'm working with a merchant on moving a 5.5 site to http://www.drundo.net and they are very familiar with able and I only had to tweak one setting after the move- they knew all the other ones to tweak an that is very rare. Customer service response time is good also.

Hello All,

I cannot vouch for these folks but AC7 has been installed to both these hosts in a shared hosting plan. If you know of any others please chime in.

I am the guy that Mike is referring to as far a hosting with Intermedia.net. I have no complaints with them thus far but I do not have any experience with Able on any other host. I am getting a weird error that I have posted about here viewtopic.php?t=6409

It is unclear to me if this is a server/host problem or some other glitch with Able. But like I say no complaints.
