Options Kits etc

Post by Ian R » Thu Jul 17, 2008 9:06 am

Hi,

Please excuse what I'm sure is a very basic question. I'm setting up a new store using AbleCommerce 7.0 the store will be selling large format digital prints and I need a way to set products up with options for size and mounting and framing.

I've set some basic products up using the "options and variants" panel but this only seems to give me a way of setting one list of options e.g. Size

Is there a way of setting a product with multiple options. I've seen disucssions on Kits elsewhere in the forum but cannot see how to create these in 7.0

Able advice much appreciated.

Regards,

Ian.

The kit itself isn't too hard but dealing with pricing is tricky.

To create a Kit:
1] Build your main (base) product.
2] Build each of your options as individual products.

Example:
Product 1] BW2024 - B/W Print 20 x 24 - $ 60
Product 2] BW2436 - Increase size to 24 x 36 - $ 22
Product 3] BW3648 - Increase size to 36 x 48 - $ 38

Next, go back to the main product, BW2024, in the Admin product editor. On the left side is a menu which one choice is Kits/Bundles.

After clicking the button, you'll be asked to set up the options. Give it a name like "Enlarge?" and then select "radio buttons". Optionally you can add a header and it's a good idea to add one. Make it say "No Enlargement Needed". The end result will appear on the product page as:

BW2024 - Price $ 60
  • No Enlargement Needed
    Increase size to 24 x 36 - $ 22
    Increase size to 36 x 48 - $ 38
The "header" radio button will be pre-selected, "no enlargement needed". If added to the cart as is, they will get the standard 20 x 24 size for $60.

Should a customer select either of the other two options, their price will be added to the base price. So a 24 x 36 size will cost $ 60 + 22 = 82.

I forgot to mention a nasty little surprise.

This procedure will work fine, for a little while. A problem arises when it's time to update your pricing. If you go back to your base product and increase the price to $ 64, the kit price does not automatically update. It will keep the old base price of $ 60.

My guess is when you create a kit initially, the system copies the base price into a new field. When you change the base price it does not update this new field.

The only way I know to fix this is delete it all and start over. I hope I'm wrong about that, but that's all that's worked for me so far.

You can have as many options as you like. I wonder why you are only able to have one option.
This product in live demo has 2 options for example

This one has 3

An example of Kit product is this
