Question about duplicate SKUS

Can anyone tell me if we can use duplicate skus. In our store we have year round items and seasonal items. Sometimes the sku is the same for both of these but the name and gift wrap is slightly different due to the season.

I'm pretty sure that skus can be whatever you want. They are not setup to be a primary key for the products table.
