Automatically add a standard product template field

I thought I saw a post about this but I can't find it now.

Has anyone customized product templates so that when you create a new template, it automatically adds one or more customer or merchant fields so the admin user doesn't have to?

Don't create a new template - build a "base" template and copy it.

That will be what I do initially but I may want to go one further that doesn't require the admin to remember to use the Base template. I was just curious if someone had already done it. Thank you for the suggestion.
