search and filtering capability by adding new attributes

Post by njain » Tue Jul 28, 2009 10:52 am

Hello,

How do I implement search and filtering feature by defining new attributes or metadata to products?

For ex: I have a product with attributes "Management Level" and "Business Issue". I would like to implement search where Management Level = 'x' and Business Issue =2.

Is there a catalog search feature that we can customize to use these attributes?

Thank you.

You can easily add the attributes via product templates, however there is no search capability available for product template fields or values.

A not-always-possible alternative is to use your category structure to define your attributes. Since you have the ability to assign the same product to multiple categories, you can sometimes set up your catalog tree by creating categories as your attributes. Then assign your products to those categories as if they were the attributes. The net result would be you can use the category pages are your "filters".

Not elegant, and doesn't work in every situation but it's about all you've got in AC7 for attribute searching. Anything more would require custom programming.
