Connection issue in SQL Server 2008

We seem to be isolating the problem with our install, and it appears to be a connection problem with the DB under SQL 2008. When trying to connect, even to a new, empty DB, we get the response "The specified database connection could not be opened." I am sure that someone else has already run into this. How do we resolve this issue. In SQL 2000 the setup was pretty simple, but there must be a setting in SQL 2008 that needs to be changed, and I am racking my brains trying to figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you, Mazhar. I searched the forums and could not find anything, so finally started a new thread. I expect that my problem will be similar to the one posted for SQL Server Express, so I will follow up on that thread.

Thank you, Katie, but I found this last night and tried it... no luck.

I finally got the installation working. It was a Server Roles issue. I had to add roles that were not selected in our SQL 2000 instance, but all seems fine on that front. The only remaining issue now is how to repair our DB so that we can remove the 1.3 million+ anonymous user entries.
