Best Practice for new license keys?

Post by jguengerich » Thu May 15, 2014 8:14 am

We recently renewed our software update subscription, which automatically generated a new LIVE license key. According to what I have found on the AbleCommerce site, the store will keep working with the original key installed. Is there any reason to install the new key, other than to have the Subscription: Ends on... date (Configure > Security > Licensing page) display a future date?

Hi Jay,

You don't have to install the new key until you are ready to upgrade. It won't hurt anything to install it now though....

Thanks
Katie

Hi Katie,

I think you misunderstood. We are already running the LIVE site with the LIVE license from our original purchase. We have simply purchased a renewal of our software update subscription, which automatically generated a new key. There is no upgrade to be done on the site itself.

The license key simply allows you to run versions per your subscription. You can continue using your existing key because it allows the version you're running. When R8 releases, which is released after your prior subscription, you will need the new key for the licensing to allow R8 to run.

Thanks Neal, I understand Katie's reference to "upgrade" now.
