Discounts not always being applied
Discounts not always being applied
I just had a customer call because he couldn't get the quantity discount to be applied. I checked it out and he was right, with the particular mix of products. He purchased two products and then added the third so his order would qualify for the $100 threshold. Here are the products:
http://www.contractors-solutions.net/Bl ... -Vest.aspx
http://www.contractors-solutions.net/Bl ... -Vest.aspx
http://www.contractors-solutions.net/Bl ... nders.aspx
As you can see, each one is set up for the "Work Wear Qty. Discount". It seems that it is only working if you purchase $100 of a single item. This behavior is new. I have been using this discount for several years, and now it doesn't seem to work like it used to.
I have the Discount Setting checked "Group By Category" under the Global Settings.
Perhaps it has something to do with upgrading to R10?

Re: Discounts not always being applied
This is working in R10. I setup 3 products that matched yours (same pricing and options). Then I setup the same Discount and applied it at the category level. Changed the global discount setting to Group by Category. When I add the 2 vests, there is no discount because the order has not met the min. amount, but when I added the suspenders, the discount was applied to all products.
Either there is some other issue here we are missing in the setup, or a customization? I don't know, but I have worked with your discounts before and we never found any bugs that I remember reporting. I'm sure that the discount code hasn't been changed in a long time either, so it doesn't make sense that it would suddenly stop working.
At this point, you can pay us for support time, and we'll get your login credentials and see if we can figure out what is going on. If we find a bug, then there is no charge. Another option for you would be to create a PDF/Word document showing all the pages where this discount is applied and how it is setup. I can't guarantee that we'll find the problem, but it might be worth a shot.
Thanks
Katie

Well, I didn't realize that you had a Global Discount. When I changed by test discount to global, it is indeed a bug. I went back to R9 and tested there, but you are correct, something changed in R10 to cause this to happen. I have reported to the development team.
As a work-around, you can edit your discount and change the Discount Scope to 'Specific'. Then click the 'Change' link. On the top of the page, check the box for each of your top-level categories and save. It will work now, and shouldn't take more than a minute to make the change.
Please let me know if you have any issues.

Thanks, it seems to works now. At first it didn't because I had those product assigned individually. I assigned the vests and suspenders the other day when I realized it wasn't working. I had to delete them and assign the workwear category and all sub-categories.
Now I am working with "Nu-Wave Qty Discount" which also isn't working. It is set to "Specific" and products are individually assigned because it is for a specific manufacturer and not the entire scaffolding category.
Here are a couple products that should qualify:
http://www.contractors-solutions.net/El ... folds.aspx
http://www.contractors-solutions.net/Nu ... -P969.aspx
How can I make this work?

Re: Discounts not always being applied
If you are applying the discount to individual products, then this might be the problem. In your screenshot above, read the description for 'Group by Category' under the Discount Setting section. Notice that it says discounts applied to Categories and/or Global store will be taken on multiple items that are eligible for the discount. If you add one of the products with the Nu-Wave discount and increase the qty so it meets the min. threshold for the discount, then it works, but only for that item.
I think that you'll need to apply the discount to a category if you want it to work like the other one.

Re: Discounts not always being applied
You should be able to create a category for the Nu-Wave products and assign all of them here. As you know, products can be assigned to more than one category. If you don't want the category to appear in the catalog, you can make it hidden. Apply the discount to this category, and it should work....in theory.

Yea, I already thought about that, but I didn't bother trying yet. (I have too many other things to do.) But, I was wondering how to make it work the way it is supposed to, like it did before. I guess that's part of the bug.

The first issue with global discounts is a bug, and we'll have it fixed in the next release. However, I don't believe that the second issue is a bug. If you want discounts to be combined, then you have to set it up by category. When I get some time, I will test the older versions to make sure this is the expected behavior.

Re: Discounts not always being applied
OK, now it is Monday and it seems that the discounts didn't work over the weekend. I haven't done anything with it since last week. I had a customer place an order where the discounts did not apply and should have. So now I am fiddling with it and it seems to be intermittent. Looking more into it, when I add a pair of X1600pants to the cart the discount applies: http://www.contractors-solutions.net/X1 ... pants.aspx
But when I add a Base Performance Tee Shirt, the discount goes away. http://www.contractors-solutions.net/Ba ... Shirt.aspx
Both products qualify for the discount.
Either I am blind to something or this is weird.

Re: Discounts not always being applied
So I guess no one has a clue as to why discounts don't work correctly in Able Commerce? Why on earth would the discount disappear when adding the T-shirt? The pants qualify for the discount by themselves, but when the shirt is added the discount goes away. What the heck???
This is frustrating.

Re: Discounts not always being applied
This started to sound familiar, so I went digging. We had disappearing discounts about a year ago with a site and Katie and I discovered the following. I'm not sure it matches your situation, but it had to do with products being in more than one category, one with discounts, one without.
Katie's testing for possible bug I reported
Katie's testing for possible bug I reported
My final reply:* Eraser Mix n Match discount applied to this category
** Coloring Books Mix n Match applied to this category
I have tried many different combinations of purchase, including adding the coloring book from the category that did not have a discount applied to it.
I have tried adding erasers before coloring books and vice-versa. In every case, the discount always appears for both products. I am using 5 as the quantity, and seeing a $5 discount for each item.
THEN.....I remembered the Discount setting. I checked my install and found that it was different. Mine was using the Line Item setting instead of Group by Category. After changing it, I was able to reproduce the issue.
I'm thinking that the reason it did not work was because the Coloring Book is assigned to two different categories and one of them did NOT have the discount assigned. I did another test where I changed the discount scope to include the second category Shop Other Products >Coloring & Activities >Coloring Books.
Then I retested (leaving discount scope set to Group by Category) and it worked.
So, it looks like there might be two possible solutions. Switch over to the Line Item setting - or - apply the discount to any group where you have products that qualify for the mix n match discounts. In other words, if a product is supposed to receive discounts, and it is assigned to more than one group, then make sure the discount scope applies to each category.
This site is the only one where I have seen the problem and it took me quite a while to debug it also. I had already told them it would have to be one category only and they never responded. I will tell them they need to apply the category discount to any additional categories if they want it to work. I think they are using the second category as a way of grouping products.

Re: Discounts not always being applied
Thanks for the response. This is ridiculous that discounts DO NOT work correctly in Able Commerce and I am told that I "can pay for support time."
I have the T-shirt (http://www.contractors-solutions.net/Ba ... Shirt.aspx ) in several categories including “Workwear”, > “Work Shirts” > “Tee Shirts”. You can see the screen shot. The discount works as long as ALL products are from the Tee Shirt category. See image. But if I add the Short Sleeve Work Shirt, the discount doesn’t work at all, even if there are 10 of them. See image.
If I simply delete the Tee Shirt, the discount appears.
The Short Sleeve Work Shirt is in the “Work Shirts” and the “Workwear” categories. So is the Tee Shirt.
I think it might have something to do with which category a product was originally created in. If the Tee shirt was originally created in “Tee Shirts” and then later added to “Workwear” and “Work Shirts”, it might create a problem. Does this make sense?

I wrote this after spending considerable time trying to reproduce the issue for you. I'm not saying there is or isn't a bug to be found. If you can wait about a week, I am working on a thorough re-test of Discounts and compiling a document for the developers with the results. It is not something that I can do easily or quickly, so that is why I need about a week to finish. At this point, you can pay us for support time, and we'll get your login credentials and see if we can figure out what is going on. If we find a bug, then there is no charge. Another option for you would be to create a PDF/Word document showing all the pages where this discount is applied and how it is setup.

Re: Discounts not always being applied
Hello,
I wanted to give you all an update on the Discount testing. So far so good....there was a minor issue with Kitted Products, but that is taken care of and I'll try to get a patch out.
I did a lot of testing with Categories and found that it is working as expected. For me, there was some confusion with the description of the global Discount Mode setting. Once I got clarification from our dev team, it made more sense. I am recommending that we modify the description as follows -
"Line Item" mode - Each product is checked individually to see whether it is eligible to receive a discount. Items that are part of a Kit are treated separately as well.
"Group Items" mode - When a discount is applied to a Category, then all of it's products in that Category and it's sub-categories are eligible to receive the discount. These items are totaled to determine the discounted amount. When a Global discount is active, then all items are totaled to determine the discount.
So, basically, if you are applying Discounts to Categories, it is only going to combine eligible items that are within that category and any items within the sub-categories. For example, if you wanted the Work-Wear discount to apply to Shirts, Pants, and Shoes (all in different sub-categories), then you would need to apply that discount to a top-level category (eg. Work-Wear) because applying it to Shirts, Pants, and Shoes separately will not combine the items together.
This is the same behavior that we had in AC7. I hope that it clears up any misunderstanding.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Katie

Re: Discounts not always being applied
No. I am afraid nothing is cleared up. Sorry.
Why does the discount disappear all together when adding the tee shirt? Please see above. I will state it again. Their can be plenty of product in the cart and it will qualify for the discount. But when the shirt is ADDED, the discount disappears. Nothing was subtracted. There are the same qualifying products in the cart, but the addition of the tee-shirt for some reason, disqualifies the discount all together.
Please try it on my site.
What's up with that?

Re: Discounts not always being applied
Katie, I think there is still an issue in this case with category discounts as far as what a merchant is expecting. I haven't tested again- this is from reading my old notes and the merchant said that the discounts did not work this way in AC7.
Say a shirt is in two categories and Category 1 has a discount and Category 2 doesn't. Add the shirt to the basket. Discount is applied.Category 2 has a hat and add that to the basket. Shirt should still get the discount because it is in Category 1. I think what was happening was that if the shirt was in the basket with no products from Category 2 in the basket, it got the discount. When the hat was added to the basket, it bumped out the shirt discount because both the shirt and hat are in Category 2.

Did you understand what I was saying about applying the Category to the top-level and then all products in THAT category and BELOW should be getting the discount?
If I refer to the screenshot you uploaded on Wed Jun 10, 2015 7:01 am, it shows that you do not have the category discount applied like I was trying to explain. If you apply the Workwear discount to the Category "Work Wear / Work Clothes..." AND you do not have any over-riding discounts assigned to specific products or lower categories, AND you have the Discount Mode set to "Group by Category", it should be working.
The T-Shirt is behaving like it has it's own discount. So make sure it doesn't by checking all other discounts you have created. Also make sure that you don't have any other discounts applied to other categories that could be conflicting with this one. If you look at the Product editing page for one of the Tshirts, it should show you the discounts that are active for the product by way of the Category application. In other words, you don't want that discount applied specifically to products.
Judy -
1. Create Category 1 with Shirt product
2. Create Category 2 with Hat product.
3. Create a Discount (50% off any price) and only apply it to Category 1 (w/ shirt).
4. Purchase only the Shirt and Basket shows the discount.
5. Add Hat product. Discount for the Shirt is still there, and no discount for the Hat. >>> This is correct.
6. Then I assigned the Shirt to Category 2 (so now it is both).
7. Cleared basket and I get the same result (Repeat Steps 4 & 5). Discount is applied to Shirt, but not the hat.
I even tested with the Discount mode setting on Group By and By Item. Same results as expected.
I don't know what's going on, but I just can't seem to find the right test scenario to find any bugs. I've done a LOT of testing. I think I have over 50 different tests created and it is working as designed. Our lead developer looked at the AC7 code and said that is working the same way, but who knows...maybe we are overlooking something that is very subtle.

Re: Discounts not always being applied
Katie,
I see now. I unchecked all the sub-categories and it seems to work now. I didn't realize that selecting sub-categories would disregard the discount. I just thought of something. Perhaps it depends on which category the user selects an item from. If tee shirts are included in both the Work Shirt as well as the Tee Shirt categories, and If the user selects the Tee Shirt while viewing in the Work Shirt category, perhaps there wouldn't have been a problem since all items are from the same category. This would make the problem intermittent, which makes things frustrating. I am really not going to try it now that it is fixed. I already tried these discounts every which way and sideways until my head was spinning. Just food for thought.
I still don't understand why adding an item from another category (Tee-Shirts) nullifies the existing discount for the work shirts, but it doesn't matter at this point.
Thanks Katie. I am sorry for the trouble I caused,
Scott

No worries Scott. I'm just glad it's working now because all the testing was making my head spin too! But I'm glad to have done a thorough retest of Discounts because I don't believe it had been done since we first released Gold. I also have a much better understanding of how the category discounts are supposed to work.

Re: Discounts not always being applied
I really hate to bring this up again, but I am still having problems with discounts. I recently decided to clean up my categories and not have ALL workwear items in the workwear category and to put them in their respective subcategories. Work pants are in the work pants subcategory, shirts are in the shirts category and so forth. As a result, there are NO products in the top level "Workwear" category, they are all in subcategories. I think this makes it less cluttered and easier for users to just drill down to find what they are looking for. Now my discounts stopped working.
According to our previous dealing with this subject, I thought it would work.

When a discount is applied to a Category, then all of it's products in that Category and it's sub-categories are eligible to receive the discount. These items are totaled to determine the discounted amount.

OK, now you probably think I am crazy. My discounts were not working when I wrote that last reply. I left it alone and had lunch. Just now I tried it and it is working again. I put one item from all subcategories and it works fine. I have made no changes.
The problem now is, that the "Available Discounts" doesn't show on the product pages, so the customer doesn't even know there is a discount.
